Social support

Social support and good social relations make an important contribution to health. Social support helps give people the emotional and practical resources they need to live fulfilled lives and be resilient to challenges they face.

The amount of emotional and practical social support people get varies by social and economic status. Studies have found a significant social gradient in social support with a lack of social support more prevalent in more deprived areas. Social support can help people be resilient and cope better with these stresses so that their negative effects are reduced. Studies have shown that providing social support can improve patient recovery rates from several different conditions. It can also improve pregnancy outcomes in vulnerable groups of women. We estimate that there are more than 130,000 people in Lancashire who experience a severe lack of social support. Severe lack of social support is more prevalent in men than women.
 

The facts and figures included in this section of the JSNA only provide a part of the current picture for Adult Social Care in Lancashire. It is the outcomes that are achieved by the services being provided that are the most important. The fifth national survey of people who use social care services took place in 2014/15, and key messages for Lancashire-12 area were:

  • In the Lancashire-12 area, 62.6% of the people surveyed rated their quality of life as good or even better (England=58.3%).
  • 81.5% of people who use services in Lancashire-12 feel that they have control over their daily lives, compared to the England average of 77.3%.
  • 94.0% of people who use services in Lancashire-12  were satisfied with the care and support they receive which compares favourably to the England average of around 89.9%.       
  • 69.9% of people who use services said they could find the information and advice that they needed which is better than the England average of 73.7%.
  • 72.9% of people who use services reported that they feel safe as they want, which compares favourably to the England average of about 68.5%. Also, 88.9% of people receiving services reported that their services made them feel safe and secure, which is higher than the England average of around 84.5%.
