Sites
Woodlands from Waste will plant and maintain a minimum of 100,000 trees per year throughout the 25 year duration of the Lancashire Waste PFI contract. In order to carry out this planting we need to identify a minimum of 40 to 50 hectares (99 to 123 acres) of suitable sites across Lancashire and Blackpool.
The woodland designs will incorporate areas of open ground because this is an important element of woodland habitat. Wherever possible (if site conditions and the intended final use of the woodland allow), the new woodland will be comprised of local native species.
Land falls into two broad categories:
Brownfield
The use of Brownfield land best reflects the ethos of the project and this might be derelict, underused or neglected land such as former industrial sites.
Greenfield
Sites in this category may include those held by landowners who want to establish new native woodland, but have found there is a funding gap between grants and the actual cost of establishment and maintenance of woodland.
Sites may be owned by Lancashire County Council or other public bodies such as District and Borough Councils, but we are also interested in supporting the establishment of new woodland on privately owned land. Some provision may be necessary in this case to ensure that there is some direct benefit to the county of Lancashire or its residents. Such benefits could include:
- Public access
- Educational visits
- Research
- Ecological or landscape enhancements
We will not plant trees where this is already a statutory requirement such as a planning stipulation or a Forestry Commission Restock and Enforcement Notice. Additionally, we can only support the planting of new woodland and will not be able to assist with the replanting of recently cleared trees.
If you know of anywhere that you would like to see planted with trees, or a derelict site in need of improvement, then please let us know about it. Either email us at woodlandsfromwaste@lancashire.gov.uk or fill in our site suggestion on-line form.
