Woodlands From Waste

Child planting tree - FC Picture Library / Andrew Fox

The Woodlands from Waste project will plant and maintain 100,000 trees per year, creating over 1000 hectares of new native woodland over a period of 25 years on a diverse range of sites across the County.  Tree planting will be carried out by Global Renewables who are the contractor in the Lancashire Waste PFI contract.

Britain was once largely tree covered, but man’s activities over hundreds of years have reduced the forest to a small proportion of the land area.

Woodlands from Waste will lead to an increase in Lancashire's woodland coverage by close to 10% of current levels. These trees will provide residents and visitors with access to all of the benefits associated with social forestry: health and well-being, recreation, landscape enhancement and increased biodiversity, a valuable asset for all to enjoy for generations to come.

Where appropriate, the project will also look to apply an Organic Growth Medium (OGM) to some of these and other sites for ecological, silvicultural or agricultural improvement.

The creation of new woodland has never been more vital.

We would like to invite suggestions  for suitable areas for woodland creation and / or Brownfield sites that will benefit from the application of a soil improver. If you know of anywhere that you would like to see planted with trees, or a derelict site in need of improvement, then please let us know about it.
